Kraken+ vs Coinbase One 2026: Which No-Fee Subscription Is Actually Worth It

Kraken+ costs $4.99/month and waives fees on $10K of volume. Coinbase One Basic costs the same but caps free trading at $500. Full breakdown of caps, spreads, and which subscription saves you more in 2026.

Updated June 10, 2026

Kraken+ and Coinbase One both promise zero-fee trading for a monthly subscription, but the caps are wildly different. Kraken+ costs $4.99/month and waives fees on up to $10,000 of monthly volume. Coinbase One Basic costs the same $4.99 but caps free trading at just $500 — you need the $29.99 Preferred tier to match Kraken’s cap. For most retail traders, Kraken+ is the better deal by a wide margin.

Both subscriptions work the same way: pay a flat monthly fee, and the platform waives your trading fees up to a volume cap. Cross the cap and standard fees return on the overage. Neither waives the spread, which is the part most people miss. The math comes down to your monthly volume and how much of these caps you would actually use.

The Core Numbers

Annual cost$49.99$49.99$299.99$2,999.99

At the same $4.99 price point, Kraken+ gives you a $10,000 fee-free cap versus Coinbase One Basic’s $500. That is a 20x difference in covered volume for identical money. To get a $10,000 cap on Coinbase, you step up to the $29.99 Preferred tier — six times the price of Kraken+ for the same coverage.

What “Zero-Fee” Actually Covers

Both subscriptions waive the explicit trading fee. Neither touches the spread.

The spread is the gap between the buy and sell price, and it is built into every quote. On deep pairs like BTC and ETH it is small — a few basis points. On thinner altcoin pairs it can run 0.1% to 0.5%, which is often more than the fee you just saved. So “zero-fee” means zero on the fee line, not zero cost. Kraken+ also leaves card-processing fees in place, and Coinbase One’s waiver applies to eligible buys and sells but still lets a spread sit inside the quoted price.

The takeaway: these subscriptions are most valuable when you trade liquid pairs where the spread is tight. On wide-spread tokens, the waiver saves you less than the headline suggests.

How the Caps Behave

The caps are hard limits, and they handle overflow cleanly.

On Kraken+, once your monthly volume crosses $10,000, standard tier fees apply only to the portion above the cap — not retroactively to the whole month. If a single trade pushes you over, only the slice above $10,000 gets charged. Coinbase One works the same way: trade free up to your tier’s cap, pay standard Advanced Trade fees on the overage.

That makes both subscriptions safe to use even if you occasionally exceed the cap. You never get penalized on volume you already traded fee-free; you just pay normal rates going forward that month.

When Each One Wins

Kraken+ wins for almost all retail traders. If your monthly volume is under $10,000, $4.99 waives every trading fee — and the base Kraken taker fee on $10K of volume would be around $40, so it pays for itself on the first trade. For a buy-and-hold investor making a few purchases a month, this is the cheapest way to use a regulated US exchange.

Coinbase One Basic only makes sense if you are tiny and already on Coinbase. A $500 monthly cap covers a single small purchase. If that is your entire trading footprint and you value Coinbase’s interface, the $4.99 is fine — but Kraken+ covers 20x the volume for the same price.

Coinbase One Preferred ($29.99) competes only if you want the bundle. It matches Kraken’s $10,000 cap but costs six times more. The extra spend buys Coinbase One’s other perks — boosted staking rewards, account protection, no Coinbase fees on the broader product suite. If you would use those, the math shifts. For pure trading-fee savings, it loses to Kraken+.

Coinbase One Premium ($299.99) is for high-volume Coinbase loyalists. Unlimited fee-free trading is the only way to win above $10,000/month on a subscription. But $299.99/month is $3,600/year, so you need real volume — roughly $60,000+ monthly at Advanced base rates — before the unlimited cap beats just paying per-trade fees elsewhere.

The Honest Comparison

For the same $4.99, Kraken+ covers 20x the volume of Coinbase One Basic. For traders who stay under $10,000 a month — which is most retail — Kraken+ is the clear winner on trading-fee savings alone. Coinbase One earns its higher price only if you want the surrounding perks, not if you are buying it purely to cut trading fees.

If your volume runs well above $10,000 a month, skip the subscription math entirely. A volume-tiered account on a low-fee exchange, or Kraken’s new Assets-on-Platform discount, will likely beat any flat subscription. FAQ

Is Kraken+ or Coinbase One cheaper?

At $4.99/month they cost the same, but Kraken+ waives fees on $10,000 of monthly volume while Coinbase One Basic caps at $500. For the same price, Kraken+ covers 20x the volume. To match Kraken’s cap on Coinbase, you need the $29.99 Preferred tier.

Do these subscriptions waive the spread?

No. Both waive the explicit trading fee but leave the bid-ask spread inside the quoted price. On liquid pairs the spread is small; on thin altcoin pairs it can cost more than the fee you saved. Kraken+ also still charges card-processing fees.

What happens when I exceed the fee-free cap?

Standard fees apply only to the volume above the cap, not retroactively. On Kraken+, if you trade $12,000 in a month, the first $10,000 is fee-free and only the extra $2,000 is charged at your normal tier rate. Coinbase One works the same way.

Is Kraken+ worth it?

For anyone trading under $10,000 a month, yes. The base taker fee on $10K of volume is about $40, while the subscription costs $4.99 and includes a one-month free trial. It pays for itself on the first trade. Above $10,000 monthly, standard volume tiers or the new Assets-on-Platform discount usually serve you better.

Should I get Coinbase One just for fee savings?

Only if you trade tiny amounts and are committed to Coinbase. For pure trading-fee savings, Kraken+ beats Coinbase One Basic on cap, and Preferred costs six times more for the same $10,000 coverage. Coinbase One makes sense mainly if you want its staking boosts and account perks on top.
